Some Things You Don't Know About Stainless Steel Turning Parts

Ⅰ. Machining characteristics of stainless steel turning parts


1. Work hardening is serious. Each cutting tool will produce a hardened layer for the next cutting. After layer by layer accumulation, the hardness of stainless steel in the cutting process is becoming greater.


2. It has large plastic deformation, high thermal strength, large cutting resistance of stainless steel turning parts, and it is difficult to curl and break chips.


3. The friction between chip and tool is large, resulting in more cutting heat.


4. The chips of stainless steel turning parts are easy to bond and form chip nodules, which causes the tool to bond and diffuse wear, resulting in crescent pits on the rake face. The cutting edge of stainless steel turning parts forms small peeling and notch.


5. The carbide particle hardness of stainless steel is very high. When cutting stainless steel turning parts, they directly contact with the tool and scratch the tool, which aggravates the tool wear.


Ⅱ. Selection of turning tools for stainless steel turned parts


According to the characteristics of stainless steel turned parts, it is required that the tool material should have the characteristics of good heat resistance, high wear resistance and little affinity with stainless steel. It can maintain excellent cutting and chip breaking performance at high temperature. At present, the commonly used stainless steel cutting materials are: high speed steel and cemented carbide.


1. Because high-speed steel can only maintain its cutting performance at low temperature, it is not suitable for high-speed cutting.


2. Cemented carbide has better heat resistance and wear resistance than high-speed steel, so cemented carbide tools are more suitable for cutting stainless steel.


Ⅲ. Selection of turning parameters for stainless steel turned parts


When machining stainless steel parts with high viscosity and high plasticity, it is required to adopt a large rake angle on the premise of ensuring that the knife has sufficient strength, so as to reduce the plastic deformation of the metal to be cut, reduce the cutting force and cutting temperature, and reduce the depth of the hardened layer at the same time.


Ⅳ. Selection of cutting oil for stainless steel turned parts


Due to the poor machinability of stainless steel turned parts, there are higher requirements for the cooling, lubrication, penetration and cleaning performance of cutting oil. The commonly used cutting oil can form high melting point sulfide on the metal surface during cutting, and is not easy to be damaged at high temperature. It has good lubrication and certain cooling effect. It is generally used in difficult stainless steel cutting, drilling, reaming and tapping.
